FEMA has unveiled a new feature for requesting a change in a property’s flood zone designation which has now made the process easier and quicker. With the Online Letter of Map Change (LOMC), professional land surveyors can now request a change over the web, instead of by mail, on behalf of clients who believe their property has been inadvertently placed in a Special Flood Hazard Zone.
This allows for a much more efficient, quicker process and applicants can even check their status in real-time. This is especially valuable in Massachusetts for elevation certificates as FEMA has recently updated their inventory of Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs). This update has placed many properties in the Special Flood Hazard Area which were previously not designated as such. As a result, demand for elevation certificates and property surveys in Massachusetts has dramatically increased in recent months.
